"With the looming concern over global warming, climate change
and equitable growth, experts feel that sustainability reporting
will soon become the norm for all progressive organizations"

THE NEED

In a world facing climate change, soaring greenhouse gas emissions, reducing bio-diversity and increasing income disparity, corporates are being asked some tough questions.
World over businesses are feeling the heat of global warming from consumers, investors, policy makers, financial institutions, non-governmental organizations, media and activists. The demand for transparency and accountability is increasing every day. Stakeholders need to know how a business is impacting the environment and whether it is an asset or a liability for the society it operates in. Non-proactive businesses not only run the risk of economic losses, but face an imminent threat of losing their societal license to operate.
  THE SOLUTION

This is where sustainability comes in. Sustainability is defined as 'Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.'
Sustainability performance of a company is gauged across what is known as the Triple Bottom Line. TBL entails reporting on economic, social, and environmental issues. Separate from an annual report, TBL reporting focuses on a company's performance in such factors as pollution, health and safety, human rights, child labor, and other social and environmental issues.

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited 2008

Mahindra & Mahindra's first sustainability report gave us the opportunity to liberally explore our faculties of lateral thinking. The outcome was a theme that bound M&M's diverse businesses with its long standing commitment to embed its resources for causes on the environmental and social fronts.
Through “Alternative Thinking” we brought out how M&M has been working to create alternative solutions across the three bottom lines. Be it creating an Alternative Movement by innovating Alternative Propulsion Technologies, enabling an Alternative Reality for the girl child through education, nurturing Alternative Growth through a nation wide plantation project or providing Alternative Care by partnering with leading medical initiatives in the country.

Being a web based report, with minimal print collateral it has a negligible carbon footprint. It has received a GRI A+ accreditation and has been nominated by Corporate Register in two award categories; Best First Time Report and Creativity in Communications.

ABN AMRO India 2007

The theme developed for the report was Global Wealth Management and the triple bottomlines were re-interpreted as Wealth Generation, Wealth Distribution and Wealth Preservation to align them with the core business of ABN AMRO India. The report has received recognition for its design excellence and was even voted The Best Report, Financial Markets in the GRI Readers' Choice Awards.

The Report was supported by various collateral (print and digital) to reinforce awareness of sustainability among the employees and create ownership towards the cause.

MSPL Limited 2006

The maiden MSPL CSR set new benchmarks in Corporate Sustainability Report (CSR) design in India and was instrumental in enhancing the corporate image of MSPL beyond the ambit of sustainability.

MSPL Limited 2007

The second MSPL report was a befitting successor to the first. It was a GRI (G2) “in-accordance” report and carried forward the baton from the first report. The report was developed on the foundation of MSPL's ability to synergize traditionally conflicting parameters – like ‘consumption and conservation' and carry them together.

Reliance Industries Limited 2006

A prime candidate for a ‘Before – After' case study. The second CSR of RIL starkly demonstrates the difference that good design can inject into a report. The report is one of the only two CSRs from India which have been rated as G-3 A+. The report articulates how the organization drivers at RIL are committed to sustainability and shares with the reader RIL's vision of sustainability.

Reliance Industries Limited 2007

The recently published third CSR of RIL amply demonstrates Cognito's ability to establish and execute a roadmap for sustainability communication design. The report focuses on how sustainability is ingrained right at the grassroot level and members across the organizational pyramid put RIL's sustainability philosophy in practice through small acts.
